The Permanent Camp Site of General Custer's Expedition

The History of Custer's Gulch

In August of 1874 the exploratory Black Hills Expedition of General George A. Custer made this the site of their permanent camp. The Gold Discovery that started the rush of 1875 was on nearby French Creek. Modern day visitors can enjoy the beauty, history and climate of this valley that has enticed people for over a century to come and stay.

At Custer’s Gulch RV Park and Campground we offer fantastic Black Hills camping with a family-friendly atmosphere. Our park is open from May to early October each year (weather permitting), so you can enjoy camping with us during the most beautiful seasons. Join us for a comfortable, relaxing camping experience — just 22 miles from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial!

Our nearby lakes offer plenty of room for paddle boating, canoeing, and fishing, not to mention swimming and picnic lunches. Custer’s Gulch RV Park and Campground is set near horseback riding areas, hot springs, and lovely golf courses. You can go hiking at Custer State Park, explore the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, or do some shopping in our local towns. And don’t miss the chance to go rock climbing, gaming at local casinos, or to take the kids out for a day of mini golf or mammoths at the Mammoth Site.

Bring your bike and pedal a section of the Mickelson Trail, a route that crosses more than 100 converted railroad bridges and passes through national forest land. You can visit the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary or ride the historic 1880 train. Custer’s Gulch RV Park and Campground is near gorgeous scenic drives such as the Needles Highway, Harney Peak, and the Iron Mountain Road (car rentals are available nearby).

Join us for fabulous events like the Mount Rushmore 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks or the Custer Gold Discovery Days in late July. Motorcycle buffs won’t want to miss the August Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. And in late September we pull out all the stops for the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. You’re sure to love exploring our beautiful part of the country!
